A Place For Everyone
Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by all the things you’ve accumulated over the years? I watched a documentary stating that an average American home has over 350,000 items in it. The amount of time it takes to collect, inventory and manage those things keeps us busy and overwhelmed most of the time. It’s interesting that we work so hard to accumulate things to make our lives more fulfilling, only to realize we are frustrated and tired at the end of the day. What if you could find a way to decrease the stress hormone cortisol in your body? What if you could increase “feel-good” dopamine levels without supplements or drugs? Let me challenge you to think about volunteering at Starting Point as a health benefit! Research shows there are benefits to volunteering: Improves mental and physical health. Provides a sense of purpose.
Nurtures new and existing relationships.
According to Mayo Clinic Health Systems (Thoreson, 2023), volunteering increases the dopamine released in the body. When the level of dopamine goes up, feelings of anxiety, stress, depression and fatigue decrease. Volunteer activities keep people engaged in their community, active physically and healthier in general.
At Starting Point, volunteers are not only vital to the services we offer but are valued and appreciated for the needs they meet.
We invite volunteers to be a part of a very special family here at Starting Point. We purposely care for our partners, volunteers, staff and clients in the way you would care for those closest to you.
Each volunteer position at Starting Point is unique.
Here are some examples of volunteer positions needed currently: Nurse volunteers who can administer and read pregnancy tests, STI/STD tests (scheduled or on-call). Childcare volunteers who can hold a baby or play with toddlers during a much-needed break for a mom participating in our Moms Group (monthly). Male advocate volunteers mentor male clients through life challenges (weekly, bi-weekly or monthly spots available).
